How To Create Your Character
If you are creating a new character, creating a character for Nelly’s By Night starts with an email sent to you from our Larpweaver system. It has a registration link for your account.
If you are playing a returning character at Nelly’s By Night, you will just have to log into your Larpweaver account to check for any updates.
If you experience issues with the system, feel free to let us know at info@fairescapestudios.com or ask in the Nelly’s By Night Facebook group.
Larpweaver
Larpweaver helps us do character creation a little differently than in most other larps. It’s a combination of pre-written and player-created characters, where the characters are built from blocks provided by the larp but partially chosen by the player.
In the end, the agency in assembling a character from the pieces the system provides is with you. If you want to emphasize one piece of the character over another, feel free. If you feel two characteristics are in conflict, choose the one that works for you. It’s your character and you can adapt it as you like. We tried not to predefine too much so there’s room for you to create your own story.
Name and Languages
The system will ask you to name your character yourself. We recommend making your character of a similar background as your appearance and language skills will sensibly fit those of your character. In the larp, your character speaks the same languages you do.
The Choices
The system will offer you a number of choices:
Character Group
This is your primary group and main social framework during the larp. If you have nothing else to do, you can always go back to your home group and check what they’re doing.
Most characters are Camarilla or Anarch, but there are unaligned characters and two secret groups. There are details in both that will give away the ‘secret,’ so we ask that you choose these groups with the intent of generating the full character… or at least keep the secret quiet till the evening of the larp. Some of the mortals in the secret group may be socially connected to the other characters.
If you are interested in a specific clan or character type, here are the groups they are in:
Brujah: The 905, The Court, The Circulatory System, Secret Group: The Faithful
Gangrel: Secret Group: The Faithful
Ghouls: The Court, The Circulatory System, The Ministry of Set, Secret Group: The Faithful, Secret Group: Underworld
Humans: Nelly’s
Malkavian: The 905
The Ministry of Set: The Ministry of Set
Toreador: Nelly’s
Tremere: The Court
Ventrue: The Court, The Circulatory System
Character Seed
This is your unique character concept on which much of the rest of the material builds on.
Character Type
This is dependent on an earlier choice, so this is a point where you choose the only available option.
Blood Resonance (Humans)
All humans have a specific emotional resonance to their blood. If strong enough, it can power vampiric disciplines and rituals. Choose one that fits your character.
Feeding Predilection (Vampires)
All vampires have a different way they prefer to hunt and feed. Choose one that fits your character.
Disciplines (Ghouls and Vampires)
All ghouls and vampires choose one in-clan discipline. Ghouls and Fledglings will be able to use at least low-level powers, Neonates will be able to use up to mid-level powers, while Ancilla will be able to use up to high-level powers. More information about how they work will be provided later, but a few core principles are that the victim of a power is always the final arbiter of how it works, and effects that affect the mental state of a character wear off after a maximum of half an hour.
Conviction
Choose one Conviction, a core value or moral principles that fortifies your actions against the degeneration of the Beast.
Reading the Results
After you’ve finished, Larpweaver will give you your character. A lot of the stuff you see here is the same as when you made your choices, but there’s also some new elements. We will also assign a few things post character generation, so read things through and check back in a day or two.
Filling in the Blanks
You can make up anything you like to fill in the blanks left by the material Larpweaver provides. Your character can have a family, a spouse and three children, or you can live alone in a rathole with nothing but a mattress on the floor. You can make up former lives, childhood friends, favorite colours, and previous employers. You can do anything.
Connections
After you’ve finished with the character, it’s time to make up connections. Some of you will have already have some family connections and others beyond your group. We will add those shortly after character generation so you have some idea of the sort of circles your character might move in and access.
We are happy to spar with you during the weeks before the larp and there will be exercises to create connections in the on-site workshops. This is a fairly short larp, so you don’t have to worry that you’ll be left without anything to do if you don’t have three mortal enemies and a love-hate relationship or five lined up.
You can use the Nelly’s By Night Facebook group to look for relationships with other players! Many of your character may move in the same circles or have crossed paths before. Feel free to seek out old friends, lovers, enemies, school chums, war buddies, or whatever else you can think up. If you can’t think of something or what to say, we’re here to help!
You can also create your own Facebook groups for your character groups and/or families and/or clans – please just name them NbN: Group Name – ie: NbN: Nelly’s House, and add Gary and Nicole!
